The original flora of Ascension is not well known due to the lack of precision in the archives from the times of the first visitors of the island. Only a handful of plants has been listed before 1815. A great deal of plants at present visible had been imported or had been accidentally introduced in the island.

We cannot expect lush vegetation especially when the island has 44 volcanoes. The land is often barren although every spell of rainy weather brings about a stunning metamorphosis of the flora. Gradually, shrubs, cacti, and wild plants spring up from a ground which seemed determined to remain despairingly arid.

"Green Mountain" is the sole place where the flora has evolved abundantly. Just as the name indicates, the place has an abundant and green vegetation: banana trees, eucalyptus, ginger and bamboo canes grow forth lavishly whilst cacti, bougainvillea, hibiscus and other various flowers add colors to the landscape. We also find beautiful trees and shrubs introduced in the island in the 19th century such as cypresses, acacias or aloes.
